Federal Spending and Taxes
Americans are taxed too much because our government spends too much. We face a looming crisis thanks to escalating federal spending. Congress has a solemn obligation to ensure that our children and grandchildren are not stuck paying the bill for the federal government’s lack of fiscal discipline. Our federal government spends too much and with very little forethought or restraint.
America must reduce our debt so we do not pass a legacy of debt onto our children and grandchildren. We must make tough choices and develop strong fiscal and economic policies that shift spending away from Washington’s special interests and in support of families, businesses, innovators and local leaders. Taxing our way out is not the answer. Even after years of trimming the budget, there is still “fat” in Washington.
We must work together to develop strong policies that cut spending and reform our tax code to make it simpler and fairer. Republicans in Congress have worked to pass budgets that will cut spending and put our nation on a strong fiscal path. I firmly believe that the only way to truly accomplish this is through a Balanced Budget Amendment to our Constitution. The State of Texas is required to live within a balanced budget, and 45 states also have balanced-budget requirements they must follow. The federal government should follow suit.
Our national debt sits at $19 trillion dollars. The only way to reverse course is through force. Left to its own devices, Congress continues to buck tough spending cuts down the road for someone else to deal with – both Democrats AND Republicans. We must make the hard choices now by cutting spending, which will allow us to ease the tax burden on families.
