OLSON VOTES TO BLOCK USE OF TAXPAYER FUNDS FOR ABORTIONS
Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) today voted to block the use of taxpayer funds to perform abortions. The legislation, H.R. 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, is a government wide prohibition on taxpayer subsidization for abortion. The bill also codifies the conscience clause known as Hyde-Weldon. The bill passed by a vote of 251 to 175.
"This common sense provision recognizes that it is morally wrong to use taxpayer funds to perform abortions," Olson said. "While abortion is technically legal, no American should be forced to aid in the destruction of innocent human life just by paying their taxes. I was a proud original cosponsor of this bill and I'm pleased the House passed this important legislation."
H.R. 3would establish a government-wide prohibition on funding abortion, as well as insurance coverage that includes abortion, except in the case of rape, incest, or when a woman’s life is at risk. This comprehensive approach ensures taxpayer dollars are not used to fund elective abortions.
