Protecting life and stopping Planned Parenthood
By Rep. Pete Olson 08/04/2015 - 10:18 AM CT

As a staunch defender of the unborn, I believe life begins at conception and every life has a soul. That’s why I work hard to enact policies that protect the unborn. As long as I am blessed to serve in Congress, I will continue to defend life. I have long been concerned with the tactics of Planned Parenthood and oppose federal tax dollars going to agencies that promote or perform abortions. As a result of two separate Government Accountability Office reports requested by me and many pro-life colleagues, we know that billions in federal taxpayer funding were spent by these groups over a ten year period.

The recent under-cover footage of Planned Parenthood officials casually discussing how to manipulate abortion procedures and bartering over the price of harvested organs is both deplorable and disgusting. This blatant lack of respect for the sanctity of life has reached a new low. Regardless of ones view on protecting the unborn, we can all agree that Planned Parenthood should not be an organ factory.

As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, we are investigating Planned Parenthood's actions right now. In the meantime, Planned Parenthood should not get a single dime of taxpayer money. That’s why in the House, Rep. Diane Black introduced H.R. 3134, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act. This bill would impose a year-long moratorium on all federal funding for Planned Parenthood pending an investigation of the current allegations. The House and Senate should pass this bill as soon as possible and send them to the president for his signature. This will send a strong message to organizations like Planned Parenthood that life is precious.

The Texas Attorney General’s office recently received unreleased video footage from a Planned Parenthood clinic that appears consistent with videos from the Center for Medical Progress. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast in Houston has claimed that actors pretending to be from a health research company toured its clinic in April and spoke with staff members. A State Senate Health and Human Services Committee held a hearing to examine whether Planned Parenthood affiliates in Texas are illegally profiting from similar actions as seen in the videos. Both Texas Planned Parenthood affiliates that were asked to testify refused to attend that hearing and provide answers. Texans and all Americans deserve transparency and accountability. We will not stop at the federal or state level until we have answers.

Planned Parenthood and their supporters want us to forget one important fact in this debate - the organs they are harvesting come from human beings. How do they get these organs and tissue? They must kill the unborn baby that grew them. When we live in a society that expresses greater outrage over the killing of one lion, versus the butchering of thousands of unborn babies for their organs and tissue, we all lose. This moral lapse is despicable and must be stopped. We must continue every effort to protect the unborn, their mothers and the sanctity of life.
