Olson Applauds FBISD Decision To Name Elementary School After Fallen Firefighter Anne Sullivan
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Pete Olson (TX-22) today announced that the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) has voted to name the new Elementary School #47 in Riverstone, after fallen Houston Firefighter Anne Sullivan. Anne Sullivan was a probationary firefighter. She had just graduated from the Houston Fire Department (HFD) Academy in April 2013. On May 31, 2013, Anne was killed at the Southwest Inn fire in Houston, along with three fellow firefighters in the worst loss of life in HFD history.
Monday, March 3oth the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees voted to name this new school after Anne, a lifelong FBISD student who attended Colony Bend Elementary, First Colony Middle and Dulles High Schools.
"This decision to name an FBISD school after one of our very own local heroes is a true testament to her selfless sacrifice for our community," Rep. Pete Olson said. "Anne Sullivan embodies the values our school district teaches to our children. Since losing Anne, her mother Mary, has worried that Anne's amazing but brief life would be forgotten. This decision ensures that Anne will be remembered for generations to come. All future boys and girls who attend Anne Sullivan Elementary School will have a daily reminder that FBISD produces the best; it produces true heroes."
“Fort Bend ISD is proud to honor the sacrifice and lasting legacy of Anne McCormick Sullivan. At only 24, Anne’s life had just begun, and she gave her life while trying to help others,†said Dr. Charles E. Dupre, Superintendent of Schools for Fort Bend ISD. “Anne’s story is a testimony to the work of the many teachers that invested in Anne’s education, and affirmation of our continuing efforts to inspire and equip all students to pursue futures beyond what they can imagine. Anne is an inspiration to all of us.â€
