Olson Applauds List of Army Corps Harvey Projects

Washington, DC – Rep. Pete Olson (TX-22) today announced support for the US Army Corps of Engineers list of projects that will be funded through the 2018 Disaster Supplemental funding bill that was passed by Congress. The Corps announced $537 million will be allocated for several disaster recovery projects in the Houston area.

“The Houston region was devastated by Hurricane Harvey last August,” Rep. Pete Olson said. “In addition to the recovery work that has already been done, one of my top priorities is to secure critical funds to prevent future flood damage. Projects like Clear Creek will prevent thousands of homes from potential future flooding. I thank the Army Corps for recognizing the importance of these projects to the Houston region. I also thank my Houston colleagues for their unwavering support during the process to secure these funds, I’m glad we can finally begin work on these critical projects to keep folks safe and prevent future flooding damage.”

Summary of Funding for Houston

The Corps FY 2018 Disaster Supplemental list includes funding for several projects in the Houston area totaling about $537 million:

  • Clear Creek: $295.165 million to initiate and complete construction of the Clear Creek flood damage reduction project
  • Buffalo Bayou and Tributaries: $11.668 million to replace the Addicks project office and repair other damages to the Buffalo Bayou and Tributaries flood damage reduction project, $6 million to initiate and complete a comprehensive study that will explore options for reducing flood risk in the Buffalo Bayou basin including Addicks and Barker Dams, and $1.454 million to complete construction of the Addicks and Barker Dams dam safety project
  • Houston Regional Watershed Assessment: $3 million to initiate and complete a study to identify flood risk management options in the Houston area, but outside of Buffalo Bayou
  • Brays Bayou:  $75 million to complete construction of the Brays Bayou flood damage reduction project and $1.75 million to repair damages to the project
  • Hunting Bayou: $65 million to complete construction of the Hunting Bayou flood damage reduction project
  • White Oak Bayou: $45 million to complete construction of the White Oak Bayou flood damage reduction project and $1.75 million to repair damages to the project
  • Houston Ship Channel: $30 million for maintenance dredging
  • Sims Bayou:  $1.025 million to repair damages to the Sims Bayou flood damage reduction project
  • $9 million to fund a study to determine additional ways to reduce flooding risks
