Olson Hosts Women in Energy Summit
Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) today hosted a Women in Energy Summit to introduce young women to careers in the energy industry. The event was held at the Nolan Ryan Center in Alvin, TX and brought experts and middle school girls together to highlight the important contributions women bring to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines.
“Today was a great opportunity to hear about the great things happening in STEM and how young women play a critical role in changing the world,†Rep. Olson said. “The pioneering work of women in STEM has taken place over hundreds of years. Change is slow but each of the women in attendance – from leading women in the energy industry to middle school students – are proof that women are taking over the STEM world.
“As Houstonians we are lucky to live in an area with countless STEM opportunities – the energy capital of the world, home of the largest medical center and home to Johnson Space Center. All of the discoveries taking place in our backyard are incredible and show young girls that if STEM is their dream, nothing will stop them. I have no doubt that some of these girls will make important contributions in these fields. Thank you to Alvin Community College, Pearland ISD and Alvin ISD for helping coordinate today’s amazing event,†Olson concluded.
Participants in the Summit included: Alvin Community College, Port of Houston Authority, Zilkha Biomass, Clean Line Energy, Westinghouse, Texas A&M, Baker Hughes, Noltex, Economic Alliance Houston Port Region, Exxon Mobil, EDP Renewables North America, CenterPoint Energy.
