Olson Rallies Both House, Senate Members to Promote Financial Accountability

April 3, 2009
Press Release

Today, Rep. Pete Olson took a much needed step toward restoring accountability to federal spending in an area that raises moral concerns among millions of Americans.

Rep. Olson authored a letter to Gene Dodaro, Acting Comptroller General of the United States, requesting the agency to determine the amount of federal funding that has gone to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide or promote abortion.  Currently, no data exists regarding how many federal tax dollars go toward these organizations.

"It’s bad enough that the massive new tax and spend policies being enacted by Democrats in Congress will make it more difficult for struggling families to pay their bills and burden our children with mountains of debt.  But it is fundamentally unjust for millions of pro-life American taxpayers to be forced to subsidize groups that promote abortion.  That our government will not even reveal how much money goes to these groups is unacceptable."

Although multiple requests from various members of Congress have been made over the past several years, the GAO has repeatedly failed to share this basic information.

In the letter, Rep. Olson writes, "It is irresponsible at best and immoral at worst to doubly penalize our citizens by taking their much needed money for government use, and then further insulting them by the method in which it is spent."

This letter has been co-signed by 30 members of Congress, both House and Senate.
