Olson Reacts to Obama's Second Amendment Executive Order

January 5, 2016
Press Release

Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) today issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s announcement of executive orders restricting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners:

“President Obama wasted no time in the new year working to circumvent the legislative process by issuing executive orders that disregard our Second Amendment rights. While every senseless shooting and loss of life is a tragedy, new gun restrictions would not have prevented any of the recent tragedies or terror attacks.

“Nothing and no one is served by politicizing these acts of violence. The most important thing we can do is to begin to seriously address the mental health issues facing our nation. We must educate people on ways to better identify those who may potentially pose a risk to others. In the Energy and Commerce Committee, we are working to address mental health issues through the proper deliberative process. The president should allow Congress to do our work.

“Instead of attacking the rights of law-abiding gun owners, we must address terrorism and the mental health issues that are truly at the heart of the problem. I will do everything I can to stop Obama’s overreach and protect the Bill of Rights.”
