Olson Statement on 2016 State of the Union
Rep. Pete Olson (TX-22) tonight issued the following statement in reaction to President Obama's final State of the Union address:
"This speech was a concerted effort to establish the president’s legacy. He touted what he views as accomplishments, but most Americans view his actions as an end run around the Constitution.
“Whether by ignoring federal immigration laws, the Second Amendment, allowing our enemies to cross red line after red line, or negotiating an agreement with Iran against the will of Congress, this president has made it his mission to transform America into a heavy handed, government-run nation. Tonight, President Obama reiterated his demand to close Guantanamo Bay. Congress has continually opposed this effort including passing the National Defense Authorization Act, which expressly states that Gitmo must remain open. The president signed this bill into law. He cannot unilaterally close this base and bring the terrorists being held there to the US.
“Republicans are disappointed because we know what America is capable of. Our nation put a man on the moon, develops cures for deadly diseases, and seeks to bring peace to a dangerous and volatile world. American exceptionalism is still in our hearts and we want to unleash that spirit to develop solutions that empower all Americans – not Washington bureaucrats. The world needs American leadership, not America leading from behind.
“American ingenuity has allowed us to access many of the rich energy resources available in this great nation that we can pour into the global market, helping our allies reduce their reliance on Russia and Iran to fill their energy needs.
“American leadership is also required to set the tone with rogue nations and organizations like ISIS who seek to harm our nation and our allies. We must stop leading from behind and remind the world why we became a superpower. As we continue to work for a better America, we must develop solutions that increase opportunity for all Americans – with more jobs, better wages, and lower health care, energy and education costs. We need a fair and simple tax code that helps working families - not Washington bureaucrats. I hope our next president shares this same vision for a strong, prosperous and confident America.â€
