Olson Statement on Afghanistan Command Change

June 23, 2010
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC– Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) today issued the following statement in response to the President’s decision to relieve General Stanley McChrystal of command in Afghanistan and replace him with General David Petraeus, the current commander of U.S. Central Command:

â€œGeneral McChrystal has served our country honorably for decades and for that he deserves our gratitude.  However, the comments made by he and his staff were inappropriate and seriously hindered his ability to command effectively.  I was pleased to hear that General Petraeus has been selected as his replacement.  His experience with counter-insurgency will be an important component to maintaining continuity for our combat troops.  This strategy is key to any victory in Afghanistan.”
