Olson Statement on Speaker Boehner's Retirement
Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) today issued the following statement in response to House Speaker John Boehner’s announcement he will retire at the end of October:
“Speaker John Boehner has served as leader of the House of Representatives during some difficult moments in our nation’s history. Serving as Speaker was an extremely tough job when Republicans held control of only one of three branches of government and equally tough with a slim majority in the Senate, and a president with little respect for Congress or the Constitution.
“He has led this House with a deep respect for the will of the people and has worked to address deeply conflicting priorities. Speaker John Boehner has a deep love of this country and the institution of Congress. The Speaker has chosen to step down out of deep respect for his conference – his team. As the Bible says in John 15:13: ‘Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.’ That's what the Speaker is doing with this resignation. May John, Debbie and the entire Boehner family have fair winds and following seas.â€
