Congressman Pete Olson

Representing the 22nd District of Texas

Press Release

Today Rep. Pete Olson issued the following statement expressing disappointment with failure to pass legislation to extend the deadline to use previously dedicated Hurricane Ike Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) funds:

“It is deplorable that Congress failed to pass an extension for the SSBG funds for Ike victims.  I introduced legislation to extend the deadline in the House and Senator Cornyn introduced similar legislation in the Senate.  Unfortunately, Senate Democrats waited until the 11th hour to address this problem and under the parameters that the bill came to the House - requiring unanimous consent of all 435 members.  One single member can derail this process.

“The Houston delegation was united in addressing the needs of Ike victims and I am appalled that any member would oppose addressing what is a minor issue for Congress, but a major issue for those still recovering from Hurricane Ike.  Rest assured that I will work with my colleagues to address this as soon as possible to ensure that those who need this help can receive it as soon as possible.”
