OLSON URGES JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO ADHERE TO SUPREME COURT RULING
Washington, DC- Rep. Pete Olson today issued the following statement in response to reports that Attorney General Eric Holder plans to ask a federal court to require Texas to get permission from the Justice Department before election rules and laws can be implemented:
"The Supreme Court was clear in its ruling that voided Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which required special scrutiny for voting rights laws and electoral changes. Yet, the Obama Justice Department is now targeting only Texas for special pre-clearance without evidence of purposeful discrimination. Every American has a sacred right to vote and Texas has taken every effort to make certain that every legal vote is counted. Attorney General Holder cannot ignore the rule of law and a Supreme Court ruling just because he doesn't like Texas."
