Olson Votes to Give States Power to Defund Abortion Clinics
Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) today acted to give states the power to determine how Medicaid dollars are allocated. Currently, federal Medicaid funds cannot be used to pay for abortions, but states cannot withhold Medicaid funds from abortion providers if they choose to. The House passed H.R. 3495, the Women’s Public Health and Safety Act, by a vote of 236 to 193.
“Today’s vote is an important step forward for states’ rights,†Rep. Pete Olson said. “Many states have laws that restrict the use of public funds for abortions and/or by abortion providers, yet the Obama White House refused to give states the needed discretion to determine how Medicaid funds are allocated. States should have the ability to make their own decisions on how federal tax dollars paid by their citizens are allocated. I’m proud to protect taxpayers and ensure that limited Medicaid dollars go to needed care and not to organizations like Planned Parenthood that perform abortions.
In 2013, Planned Parenthood performed 327,653 abortions at a rate of one abortion every three minutes. A Government Accountability Office report published earlier this year concluded that Planned Parenthood received about $1.2 billion through Medicaid over a three-year period.
