Olson Votes to Protect Life & Defund Planned Parenthood

September 18, 2015
Press Release

Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) today voted to implement penalties for those who refuse care for babies born alive during an abortion procedure, as well as defund Planned Parenthood while they are being investigated for allegations of harvesting the organs of unborn babies. The House passed H.R. 3504, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. This bill updates a 2002 law, which protects infants born alive after a failed abortion by requiring doctors to provide any needed medical care to save the surviving baby in pain. This update places needed criminal penalties on doctors or abortion practitioners who fail to give proper medical treatment to abortion survivors. Olson was an original cosponsor of the bill, which passed by a vote of 248 - 177.

The House also passed H.R. 3134, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, a bill that would impose a year-long moratorium on all federal funding for Planned Parenthood while Congress continues its investigation. Olson was an original cosponsor of this bill as well, which passed the House by a vote of 241 - 187.

“The image of someone casually discussing price and method to extract human body parts from an innocent unborn child reflects a disturbing lack of respect for life,” Rep. Pete Olson said. “Congress acted today to protect an unborn child born and separated from its mother’s womb, by implementing penalties for failing to protect a child that survives an attempted abortion.

“The second bill merely redirects taxpayer funds from Planned Parenthood facilities across the nation to the more than 13,000 other women’s health clinics in this country while the investigation is underway. We can look out for women’s care without compromising the sanctity of life. The veto threat issued by this President is a stain on the moral fabric of this nation and should be challenged. I’m proud that the House acted and urge the Senate to pass these bills as well to protect the sanctity of life,” Olson concluded.
